Vol. 185 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Coal Tests.

38.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will arrange to have tests carried out in the Balla-Ballinamore area, County Mayo, to ascertain (1) if coal is present (2) its quality, and (3) the estimated quantity.

I am advised that geological surveys and examinations of the Balla-Ballinamore area already carried out reveal that there is no expectation that workable coal seams exist in the area. The expenditure of public moneys on further tests for coal in the area would not, therefore, be justified.

Do I understand these tests have been carried out?

That is so, and the tests carried out indicated there are no workable seams.

Could the Minister say when these tests were carried out?

Not at the moment, but if the Deputy will put down a Question I shall give him the information.
