Vol. 185 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Vaccination with Live Polio Virus.

15.

asked the Minister for Health whether in view of the success reported from Sweden of the vaccination with live polio virus prepared in the Swedish State Bacteriological Institute and given orally, he has satisfied himself that either this or any other oral vaccination method could yet safely be initiated in this country.

I received in the last few weeks the report of the Expert Committee on Poliomyelitis of the World Health Organisation which met in June last and which studied experience with live polio virus vaccines in various countries. The question of authorising the use of such vaccines in this country is at present being considered in the light of that report and other available information regarding vaccination trials with them.

Could the Minister give any idea as to when he is likely to reach a conclusion on that matter?

If I am to be guided by the report of the expert committee to which I am referred I should have to accept this view: "It is the Committee's belief, however, that not all questions have yet been answered and that an accumulation of further data is necessary before the unlimited use of live polio virus vaccines can be recommended without qualification."
