Vol. 185 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Duty on Articles of Personal Apparel.

18.

asked the Minister for Finance if articles of personal apparel not exceeding £5 in total value come within the range of goods which may be imported free of duty by passengers entering the State from Great Britain, as referred to in a reply of 26th October, 1960; if so, if he will instruct the customs authorities to implement this concession at Dublin Airport and other ports; and if he will arrange for the exhibition of notices in all customs halls advising the public of their rights in regard to this matter.

Articles of personal apparel come within the scope of the baggage concession in question. This concession is of long standing and I am satisfied that it is being applied at Dublin Airport and other ports. It must be understood, however, that the concession is not allowed where a passenger, on being questioned, does not freely disclose to the Customs Officer any goods acquired abroad.

The question of the exhibition of notices in customs halls is being examined by the Revenue Commissioners.
