Vol. 185 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Accidents Involving Buses, Lorries and Vans.

38.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if in view of the desirability of being able to make a true comparison as to safety between rail and road transport, he will introduce legislation making it obligatory on operators of omnibus services and road haulage services to report road accidents involving their buses, lorries and vans to his Department.

Provision is already made under the Road Traffic Act. 1933, for reporting road accidents and statistics of these accidents which result in personal injuries are published in the Irish Trade Journal and Statistical Bulletin. Statistics of railway accidents reported to my Department under the Railway Acts are published in the Annual Statistical Abstract.

I am not satisfied that there is any need for the legislation suggested by the Deputy.
