Vol. 185 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Public Rights of Access to Foreshore.

40.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if in view of the fact that some foreign purchasers of land adjoining the foreshore have recently excluded the public from the foreshore, he will take steps to stop private persons from denying to the public rights of access to the foreshore, which have been enjoyed for many generations past.

I have no knowledge of any recent interference with public access to foreshore. Without particulars of the foreshore concerned and of the manner in which the public have been excluded from it, I cannot say whether there are any steps which I can take in the matter. If the Deputy will furnish this information I shall have the position investigated.

If it is a fact that one has been denied access to the foreshore, could we insist on a person having free access to the foreshore?

Access to the foreshore is based on statutory and common law rights and anybody who is denied such access can establish these rights.
