Vol. 185 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Refund of Compensation for Dependants of Congo Victims.

43.

asked the Minister for Defence if the United Nations will refund to this country the compensation being paid to dependants of soldiers who lost their lives in the Congo.

It is understood that, within certain limits, the United Nations accepts responsibility for the refund of compensation paid to dependants of personnel who lose their lives while serving with United Nations forces and it is the intention to seek such refund in the cases to which the Deputy refers.

Can the Minister say the amount in each case or is there an overall figure which will be refunded?

No. It is intended to seek the refund. We cannot know for certain yet.

Can the Minister say whether the compensation for which the United Nations is liable is related to what is paid in an individual case or is there an overall sum to cover the total amount of compensation?

I believe it will be paid in relation to the amounts fixed by the country concerned.

In other words, they pay the aggregate of what we pay?

That is what we hope.
