Vol. 185 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Repair of Dunmore East Pier.

17.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that the pier at Dunmore East is in immediate need of repairs; and what action he proposes to take in the matter.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply to his Questions on 17th November, 1960.

I am not aware that the pier is in need of any immediate repairs. If the Deputy will state what repairs he has in mind, the matter will be investigated.

The Parliamentary Secretary should meet me in a more liberal way. Will he send one of his officers down to Dunmore and he will discover the sea is going through the pier there? I was there myself yesterday. Will the Parliamentary Secretary tell the House what objection his Department have to spending any money in Dunmore, the port where all the fish are caught?

The maintenance of the pier at Dunmore East is the responsibility of the Office of Public Works and I am satisfied that it is inspected and repaired frequently. Not so long ago, a diver examined the underwater portion of the pier; fairly extensive repairs were carried out and were completed only a short time ago. The road leading to the pier has been resurfaced and the masonry has been repaired. Unless the Deputy is referring to improvements, which are quite different from repairs, the engineer in charge reports that no immediate repairs are necessary.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary say when the last inspection was carried out at Dunmore?

Work has only been completed on the underwater portion of the pier. A diver was employed at considerable expense. We have had no application from the Deputy or anyone else——

I have made the application in this House and have been making applications for five years.

That is not relevant to the Question.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary tell me any other way I can bring the matter to his notice?

That does not arise.

Send me a postcard.

I shall tell the people in Dunmore what the Parliamentary Secretary has said. If he goes down there they will throw him into the harbour.

Would the Deputy allow the business of the House to proceed?
