Vol. 185 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cost of Department of Justice.

21.

asked the Minister for Justice what is the estimated cost of his Department in the financial year ending 31st March, 1961, including supplementary estimates passed or in contemplation.

Total expenditure for the nine Votes for which I am responsible is estimated at £6,463,500 for the year ending 31st March, 1961. This figure includes a Supplementary Estimate of approximately £360,000 which will be required to cover pay increases granted to the Garda Síochána under the Conciliation and Arbitration Scheme.

Has the Minister been able to include in his reply a detailed figure of the administrative cost of his Department, as distinguished from the eight other Votes for which he answers to the House?

I cannot give that offhand but I can tell the Deputy that none of the estimates that have been given so far has been exceeded, with the exception of the Garda Síochána Vote, which, as I mentioned in the reply, has been exceeded as a result of the award by the Arbitration Board of £360,000.

I am afraid the Minister has mistaken the tenor of my question. I asked: What is the estimated cost of his Department, which I do not think can be interpreted as including the cost of the Garda Síochána and the other services for which he answers to the House.

I think I have fully answered the question the Deputy has on the Paper.

The Question was meant to elicit the cost of the Minister's Department as distinct from the Garda Síochána and other services.

It is in the Book of Estimates.

Not in the form requested, that is, including Supplementary Estimates passed and in contemplation.

I mentioned a figure of £6,463,500.

That includes the Garda Síochána?

It includes everything.
