Vol. 185 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Holiday Season Star Flights.

29.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether Aer Lingus propose to introduce star flights between this country and the United Kingdom during the holiday season to facilitate intending travellers to this country during that period.

I am informed by Aer Lingus that the star flights are normally provided during the summer season when traffic in both directions is at its peak. This enables the Company to offer reduced fares for such flights. The same conditions do not apply at Christmas when the demand for accommodation is mainly in one direction only. The Company has already published its time table showing that its normal services will be considerably augmented for the 1960 holiday season.

For instance on the Dublin London route Aer Lingus and BEA will provide 75 flights, each way, in the week preceding Christmas, as compared with the normal combined total of 36 flights by the two companies. The additional flights will be spread over an extended operating day of 18½ hours. Aer Lingus also indicate in their time-table that if additional capacity is required on any day, extra services will be operated as necessary.
