Vol. 185 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Heating and Toilet Accommodation in National Schools.

63.

asked the Minister for Education what steps he can take to ensure that national schools are adequately heated during winter time, and that the toilets conform to reasonably hygienic standards.

Under the Rules and Regulations for National Schools, it is the duty of the manager of every school to ensure that the school is adequately heated and that the out-offices are regularly cleansed and generally maintained in a sanitary condition. To enable managers to carry out this responsibility, an annual grant is provided by my Department to supplement the amounts provided from local sources towards the cost of heating and cleaning national schools and the cleansing of the toilet accommodation.

I might add for the Deputy's information that these grants were increased in 1956 and again in 1959.
