Vol. 185 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Department of Social Welfare: New Offices.

21.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Finance the estimated cost of building new offices for the Department of Social Welfare in substitution for the offices now occupied by that Department in Store Street, Dublin; and when it is expected building operations will commence and finish.

Pending the completion of sketch plans, which are at present in the course of preparation, it is not possible to give a firm estimate of the cost. Provisionally, however, it is estimated that the cost of the building, in which it is also intended to house the staffs of the Department of Health and the Stationery Office, will be of the order of £1,100,000. Building operations are not likely to commence before the end of 1961.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary say whether the restrictions on the subsidisation of footwear at this Christmas time are intended to supplement the fund to build the new Department offices?

Mercenary.
