Vol. 186 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Development of Castletownbere Pier.

2.

asked the Minister for Finance when it is proposed to commence work on the development of Castletownbere Pier, County Cork.

It will be some time yet before construction works can be put in hands. The Deputy will appreciate that considerable survey and design work is necessary before a major work such as this can be started. We are pressing on with the engineering investigations and I would like to assure the Deputy that they are being expedited as much as possible but at this stage I cannot name a date for starting actual work on the site.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary give an approximate date?

It was thought that the borings and soil-testing preliminary to the final test would have been begun before now, but owing to the delay in carrying out the work at Killybegs, it was not possible to begin at Castletownbere. The Department of Lands are urging me almost daily to have the work carried out. A separate section has been set up to deal with it and I assure the Deputy the work will be expedited.
