asked the Minister for Justice (a) the number of district probate registrars in the State, (b) the qualifications necessary for appointment as a probate registrar, (c) the amount of annual salary or allowance payable to each probate registrar for the year ended 31st December, 1960, (d) the total amount of fees received by the Exchequer in respect of services rendered by all the probate registries for the last financial year and (e) the date and amount of the last increase of salary or allowance granted to probate registrars.

As a large number of figures are included in the reply, it has been prepared in tabular form and will, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, be published in the Official Report.

Following is the statement:

(a) The number of County Registrars who perform District Probate Registrar duties is six.

(b) The Probates and Letters of Administration Act (Ireland), 1857, provided that a District Probate Registrar should be “an Advocate, Barrister-at-Law, Proctor, Solicitor or Attorney-at-Law”. Appointments under that Act are not now made, the duties being assigned to County Registrars under section 9 of the Court Officers Act, 1945.
