Vol. 186 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Telephone Calls: Unit Value.

82.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs what is the unit value of local telephone calls from call offices to other exchanges or call offices, and their cash value.

I assume that the local calls which the Deputy has in mind are those where the calls to other exchanges or to call offices in other exchange areas are operated by the Subpostmaster. The credit allowed to a Subpostmaster for handling a local call of this sort is half a unit. In addition he receives annual cash allowances for this work the amount of which depends on the type of call offices from which the calls are made.

The cash value of a unit to a Subpostmaster depends on the volume of post office business transacted at his office and varies from about ½d. at the larger offices to about 5d. at the very small offices. The average value of the unit is about 1½d.
