Vol. 186 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Lawless Case: Government Legal Representation.

2.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Taoiseach the fees which have been or will be paid to Irish lawyers retained on the Government's behalf in the Lawless case.

I do not consider it would be desirable in the public interest to give the information sought by the Deputy.

It never has been the practice to give details of fees paid to counsel acting on behalf of the State in individual cases.

3.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Taoiseach when Professor Paul Reuter was retained on behalf of the Government in the Lawless case; what solicitor instructed him, and the number of days he spent in Strasbourg on the case; whether he addressed the Court; and, if so, how often, and when.

Professor Paul Reuter was retained on behalf of the Government in July, 1960. He attended at Strasbourg from the 3rd to the 5th October, 1960, as one of the Counsel assisting Mr. T. Woods, the Permanent Representative of the State to the Council of Europe, who acted as agent of the Government. He did not address the Court.
