Vol. 186 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Relief of Tipperary Flooding.

35.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of the damage which is being caused by the flooding of the Carrigchorrig and the Cloughjordan Rivers, County Tipperary; and, if so, if any grants will be made available to the North Tipperary County Council from his Department to relieve such flooding.

There are no funds at my disposal for grants of the kind referred to in the Question. The extent of the work involved in the drainage of these rivers places them outside the scope of the Rural Improvements Scheme. I regret that I cannot at this stage indicate when it would be possible to consider the cases under the 1945 Arterial Drainage Act.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary say whether this work could be carried out under the Local Authorities (Works) Act?

In April, 1957, the North Tipperary County Council indicated that it was beyond the scope of that.
