14.

asked the Minister for Finance the inclusive married scales for principal officers and assistant principal officers in the Department of Finance and in other Departments operative (a) on 31st December, 1959, and (b) on 1st January, 1960; and if he will give the reasons why the increases granted to Department of Finance personnel as from 1st January, 1960, were not granted to officers in the same grades in outside Departments.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 12, 13 and 14 together.

The details requested in the first part of the questions are set out in tabular statements which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, will be circulated with the Official Report. Mr. Ryan

Would the Minister agree that the effect of the increase given to these people was to widen again the margin between the people in the Department of Finance and those in other Departments of State? It was undesirable to create that difference.

When the Deputy reads my reply, he will see it narrows it.

Mr. Ryan

For a while but it has since been enlarged.

Not for a while but for all time.
