asked the Minister for Finance the reasons why officers in certain higher grades in his Department receive more salary than officers in corresponding grades in other Departments who have entered the civil service by the same examinations and possess the same qualifications.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take questions Nos. 9, 10 and 11 together.

Though the same titles are applied to avoid excessive complexity, the higher grades in the Department of Finance do not correspond exactly with those similarly styled in the general service. The variations in salary to which the Deputies refer arise from the nature of the duties and responsibilities of the officers and from different staffing structures.

Mr. Ryan

Would the Minister say who decided that the status of these men does not correspond and who also decided that the nature of their duties was such as to entitle them to higher pay than people in similar grades in other Departments?

The Minister for Finance for the time being decides.

Mr. Ryan

Advised by these men themselves, is that not right?

Yes, among other advice.
