Vol. 188 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Abbey Theatre Owners.

11.

asked the Minister for Finance who will be the owners of the Abbey Theatre when the rebuilding is completed.

The National Theatre Society, Ltd., who were the owners of the original Abbey Theatre, will be the owners of the new theatre when re-built.

Does this mean that Dáil Éireann has given a present of £250,000 to the directors of the Abbey Theatre?

It certainly does not mean that Dáil Éireann or anybody else has given a present of £250,000 to the directors of the Abbey Theatre.

Will it be possible for the directors of the Abbey Theatre to sell their shares in the Abbey, therefore, to whom they will?

I am not aware that the directors of the Abbey Theatre hold any substantial portion of shares, but it will not be possible to sell the theatre to anybody whom they will.

The directors hold 1,200 shares.

Probably as trustees.
