Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state in respect of each of the past four years the number of petitions against decisions of the Courts (a) received by him and (b) refused by him and the number of such decisions interfered with by him.

1,226 petitions were received by the Minister for Justice in the year ended 31st December, 1957. In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 23 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1951, the Minister mitigated penalties imposed by courts exercising criminal jurisdiction in 359 cases, and took no action in 867 cases.

The corresponding figures for 1958 were: 1,149; 290; 859. The corresponding figures for 1959 were: 1,125; 262; 863. The corresponding figures for 1960 were: 1,184; 299; 885.
