Vol. 188 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Motor Car Purchases: Form of Guarantee.

23.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether his attention has been drawn to the fact that the standard form of guarantee to be signed by purchasers of new motor cars purports to deprive such purchasers of their common law rights in relation to the remedying of defects in the cars; and if he will introduce legislation to safeguard the rights of purchasers in this matter.

I have seen the article referred to by the Deputy. I have no evidence that a prospective purchaser of a car who refused to sign the standard form of guarantee would ordinarily be unable to complete the purchase. On the information at present available to me, therefore, I do not think that legislation on the subject is called for.
