Vol. 188 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Disabled Persons Maintenance Allowance in Wexford.

5.

asked the Minister for Health the date from which the Wexford County Council decided to increase the disabled persons maintenance allowance by 2/6d. per week; if all recipients were paid this increase; and if they were all paid the increase from the date decided upon.

The decision whether or not to pay an allowance under the Disabled Persons (Maintenance Allowances) Regulations and the amount of such allowance (subject to the statutory maximum) is one for the local authority concerned and I have no function in regard to any individual case.

I am informed by the Wexford County Council, in response to a recent enquiry, that they decided to increase by 2/6d. a week with effect from 1st January, 1961, viz, the date of the coming into operation of the Disabled Persons (Maintenance Allowances) Regulations, 1960, such allowances as were then payable at the maximum rate. All persons in receipt of the maximum allowance, representing about 85% of all recipients, in the Council's functional area, got the benefit of the full increase from that date.
