Vol. 188 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Direct and Indirect Taxation.

3.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Taoiseach the percentage of all taxation paid in (a) direct taxation and (b) indirect taxation in each year since 1948 to the most recent date for which figures are available.

I propose, with the permission of the Cheann Comhairle, to circulate in the Official Report a statement giving the required information in respect of all public authorities for each year 1947-48 to 1960-61. Direct taxes have been taken as taxes on income and capital (including social insurance contributions), while indirect taxes have been taken as taxes on expenditure (including rates).

Following is the statement:—

(a) Taxes on income and capital (including social insurance contributions) and (b) taxes on expenditure (including rates), as a percentage of total taxation.
