Vol. 188 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Collection of Income Tax.

7.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the amount collected under Schedule E Income Tax for the four years ended 31st March, 1961, including separately the amount collected under P.A.Y.E. in the last year, and in any year in which exact figures are not available giving rough approximations.

The precise information for which the Deputy asks is not available as, under the system of accounting for Income Tax, the net receipt for any year is not segregated under the various Schedules. A rough estimation has, however, been made of the amount collected under Schedule E for the years concerned. The figures are:

1957-58

£6.9 million

1958-59

£7.4 million

1959-60

£7.6 million

1960-61

£9.8 million

I must stress that these are necessarily only approximate figures.

From the 6th October, 1960, the amounted collected under P.A.Y.E. has been separately accounted for. The figure of £9.8 million for 1960-61 includes a sum of £3,427,000, under P.A.Y.E.

I do not understand the last paragraph in the Minister's statement.

The Deputy asked for some figures under P.A.Y.E. and I should say that of the total figure of £9.8 million, £3.4 million was under P.A.Y.E. That was for a half year. If the Deputy wants a picture of it, it would be something like £6.8 million for a full year under P.A.Y.E.
