Vol. 189 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Generation of Electricity: Harnessing of Tideways.

19.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if the Electricity Supply Board have examined the feasibility of harnessing the tideways at suitable points around the coast to generate electricity power.

I am informed by the Electricity Supply Board that the question of using tidal water as a source of power for generating electricity has been considered by the Board from time to time. In view of the difficult problems involved in harnessing and using this power in an economic manner, and having regard also to the availability of other and more economic sources of power, the Board has decided that detailed examination of tidal water projects is not warranted at present.
