Vol. 189 No. 5

Poisons Bill, 1960—From the Seanad.

The Dáil went into Committee to consider an amendment from the Seanad.

I move that the Committee agree with the Seanad in the following amendment:

In page 5, between lines 17 and 18, the following inserted:

"‘supply' includes giving without payment, and cognate words shall be construed accordingly."

I propose to accept this amendment. Will the House give it to me now?

I understand the Taoiseach has strong objections to accepting an amendment from the Seanad on the day it is introduced.

If the Deputy is not prepared to waive the objection I shall not press it.

I am always prepared to waive objections of that sort. If the Minister wants it today he can have it.

It was suggested in the Seanad that the words in Section 14 might not cover giving poisons free of charge. This amendment is designed to clear up any doubt that there might be in that regard, so that if a person did give a poisonous substance in a container which was not in accordance with the regulations he could be prosecuted.

Question put and agreed to.
Amendment reported and agreed to.
Ordered: That a message be sent to the Seanad accordingly.
