Vol. 189 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Emigration from Fíor-Ghaeltacht Areas.

4.

asked the Taoiseach the figures for emigration from all areas regarded officially as Fíor-Ghaeltacht areas in (a) Mayo, (b) Galway, (c) Donegal (d) Kerry, (e) Waterford and (f) Cork in the years 1926, 1936, 1946, 1956 and 1960.

As has been stated many times in reply to questions in this House the net emigration from various areas can be estimated only for intercensal periods. This estimation requires data on the population of each area at successive censuses as well as the number of births and deaths among persons normally resident in the areas during the intervening period. While the population statistics can be obtained it is not possible from the available records to compile the necessary vital statistics either for the Fíor-Ghaeltacht areas as defined by the Report of Coimisiún na Gaeltachta or for the Gaeltacht areas as defined by Ordú na Límistéirí Gaeltachta, 1956. The information required by the Deputy cannot, therefore, be given.
