Vol. 189 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Gardaí in Fíor-Ghaeltacht: Competence in Irish.

13.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he is satisfied that all Gardaí now stationed in Fíor-Ghaeltacht areas are fully competent to conduct their business with the population in Irish.

The Commissioner, Garda Síochána, has informed me that, with the exception of one member who is engaged in criminal investigation the members of the Force stationed in Garda Gaeltacht areas have a good knowledge of the Irish language. All but thirteen of the members have passed the Irish Proficiency Tests conducted by the Civil Service Commissioners.
