Vol. 189 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Registered Electors.

25.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will give the total of registered electors for each of the years 1956 to 1961, inclusive.

As the reply is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate it with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:

Year commencing on 15th April

Total number of registered electors

1956

1,762,129

1957

1,745,046

1958

1,720,059

1959

1,701,801

1960

1,694,789

1961

Not available

Note. — Because of the multiple basis of registration of persons as Dáil electors and as local government electors, there are small differences between the figures in this table and the figures for the total number of (1) Dáil electors and (2) local government electors.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Minister for Local Government when the register of electors will be available for publication.

The statutory date for the publication of the register of electors is 15th April in each year and the current register is in fact published in all areas. I understand, however, that because of the constituency proposals in the Electoral (Amendment) Bill, 1951, at present before the Seanad, registration officers for some areas have deferred issuing copies to Deputies until they can indicate on them the new constituencies in which the various registration units are situated.
