Vol. 189 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of Caltra (Galway) Lands.

30.

asked the Minister for Lands if the Land Commission have considered the propriety of acquiring the Mason Estate, Caltra, Ballinasloe, County Galway.

31.

asked the Minister for Lands if the Land Commission will consider the propriety of acquiring the holding of the late George Mason, Lurgan, Caltra, Ballinasloe, County Galway, in view of the congestion which still exists in the locality.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 30 and 31 together.

Proceedings have been instituted by the Land Commission for acquisition of these lands but it is still too soon to indicate what the outcome will be. An objection on behalf of the representatives of the deceased owner still remains to be resolved.

Is the Minister aware that I have been making repeated representations to the Land Commission since this man died and, in view of the local acute congestion and of the danger that the lands may be sold, will the Minister ensure that the Land Commission will not consent to any proposed sale and that the proceedings to have them acquired will be expedited?

I am aware of the Deputy's repeated representations to the Land Commission. The position is that the Land Commission have instituted proceedings and in these circumstances it is not feasible to effect a private sale until the proceedings are terminated.
