Vol. 189 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment of Relief Postmen.

33.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will explain the procedure adopted for the employment of temporary relief postmen; and who is responsible for making the appointments.

34.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether it is necessary for a man who is applying for relief work as a temporary postman to supply the names of two other persons for the purpose of the obtaining of a reference from these two persons.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions No. 33 and No. 34 together.

Men required by my Department for temporary relief duty as Postmen are recruited through Employment Exchanges. Postmasters, acting in accordance with standing instructions select for the work the most suitable of those listed by the Employment Exchanges. Applicants for work as temporary postmen are required to state the names of two responsible persons to whom application can be made as to their character.

Will the Minister say in respect of these appointments whether or not the special nominations are sent to the Department of Social Welfare?

This Question relates to temporary relief postmen and the employment of such men is left entirely to the local postmaster. In the case of replacing auxiliary postmen for a matter of a couple of days the postmaster can appoint any person to deliver the mail but after that period he goes to the Labour Exchange.

For shorter periods he need not go to the Labour Exchange?

Generally speaking that is the position.
