Vol. 189 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Galway Schools.

36.

asked the Minister for Education (1) the number of new national schools built in County Galway since March, 1957, to date, (2) the number of additional rooms built on to existing national schools in the same period, (3) the total number of teachers who were appointed to new posts in national schools in the county for the same period, and (4) the number of teachers who would have been sanctioned for new posts in the county if suitable accommodation had been available.

The position in this regard in Co. Galway since March, 1957, is as follows:

(1) 27 new national schools have been erected;

(2) 4 additional classrooms have been built on to existing national schools:

(3) A total of 31 teachers have been appointed to new posts in national schools;

(4) The appointment of teachers to three other new posts would have been sanctioned if suitable accommodation had been available for them.

Would the Minister agree to sanction these appointment under the existing accommodation in view of the extra and onerous work the teachers have to do because of the large numbers in their classes until such time as the new buildings have been erected?

There are different reasons in each case for not doing what the Deputy asks but, in general, if the class averages warrant it and the class rooms are large enough, it will be done.
