asked the Taoiseach the numbers employed in Ireland mainly or exclusively in horticulture and market gardening, county by county, for each of the years 1950-59.
Written Answers. - Numbers Employed in Horticulture, Market Gardening.
The only year for which relevant information is available is 1951. The data for that year are derived from the Census of Population, 1951. On that occasion a classification was made as to the "industry" or "branch of economic activity" in which each person was engaged. The following table shows the totals for the State for those at work in industries which might be considered relevant to the Deputy's question:
Industry |
Number at work |
Market gardening and fruit growing |
1,107 |
Flower and seed growing and nursery gardening |
477 |
Other and undefined gardening (excluding private gardening) |
387 |
Total above industries |
1,971 |
The classification by area was made only for the aggregate of the three industries specified above. The following table shows the number at work on Market gardening and fruit growing, flower and seed growing and nursery gardening and other and undefined gardening (excluding private gardening) who resided in each County and County Borough and in Dún Laoghaire Borough as returned at the Census of Population in question.
