Vol. 189 No. 10

Industrial Research and Standards Bill, 1961—Report and Final Stages.

I move amendment No. 1:

In subsection (1), page 6, to insert "stated in the notification" after "reasons" in line 21.

During the debate on Committee Stage, Deputy Dillon raised the point that in the case of the removal from office of a member of the Board of the Institute, in the Bill as it stood, the Minister was not required to state any reason. On examination, I have acceded to the suggestion made by Deputy Dillon that the person who is removed from membership of the Board ought to be informed of the reasons. The amendment is designed to achieve that purpose.

Amendment agreed to.

I move amendment No. 2:

In page 6, to delete lines 29 to 34 and substitute:

"(1) Where a member of the Board becomes a member of either House of the Oireachtas, he shall, upon his becoming entitled under the Standing Orders of that House to sit therein, cease to be a member of the Board."

This amendment is also introduced to meet a point raised by Deputy Dillon. He objected to the provision in the Bill whereby if a member were selected as a candidate for either House of the Oireachtas, he would be automatically required to resign his seat on the Board. I have again acceded to the suggestion made by Deputy Dillon that he should not be so required, unless he actually succeeded in being elected to either House. This amendment is again designed to achieve that purpose.

Amendment agreed to.
Bill, as amended, received for final consideration and passed.
