Vol. 189 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - British Levy on Irish Sugar and Sugar Products.

21.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is now in a position to report the result of the representations made to the British Government on the levy of £16 a ton on Irish sugar and sugar products entering Britain, which appears to be a violation of Article 5 of the trade agreement between the two countries; and if he will state the result of the representations made to the U.S. authorities for the establishment of an import quota for Irish sugar.

Consideration of these matters is not yet completed and accordingly I am not yet in a position to state the outcome of the approaches we have made in either case.

Can the Minister say if discussions on this matter are at present proceeding?

They have been proceeding, yes.

Does that mean they have concluded?

No, they have not concluded.

They are still proceeding?

It took a long time to get rid of the mess you made.

Talk some sense for once.

You are trying to send sugar to England.
