Vol. 190 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Home produced Articles Subject to Quota and Customs Duties.

36.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will give a list of the articles produced in this country the importation of which is (a) subject to quota and/or (b) liable to customs duty of 50 per cent. or over, and the number of people employed in such industries; and whether he has considered the effect of Ireland entering the Common Market on such industries and employment.

Particulars of the tariffs on imported goods and of goods subject to quota are given in the publication entitled the "Customs and Excise Tariff" issued under the authority of the Revenue Commissioners. A copy of this publication is available in the Oireachtas library.

A classification of the manufacturing concerns in this country according to the protection afforded to their products is not maintained by my Department and, accordingly, the information regarding employment sought by the Deputy is not available.

The possible effects on industries and employment of Ireland entering the Common Market are being considered in consultation with industry and these discussions are continuing. Until the terms of entry which might be available for Ireland become known, however, it would not be possible to reach conclusions in the matter.
