Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Talks with Union of South Africa.

17.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether he considers that the recent and proposed future trade talks with the Union of South Africa, and the proposed expansion of trade with that country, can rightly be reconciled with the position taken up by the Irish delegation to the United Nations on South African questions; and whether he considers that such contracts and trade with South Africa will prejudice Ireland's position of influence in UNO vis-á-vis the uncommitted countries and the Afro-Asian nations.

The South African group which came to Dublin was comprised largely of South African businessmen, who had already visited many European countries. The brief talks which took place were of an exploratory character and no arrangements were made for future meetings.

I do not believe that the talks referred to will in any way prejudice Ireland's position in the United Nations vis-à-vis the Afro-Asian nations.
