Vol. 190 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Steps to Arrest Emigration.

3.

asked the Taoiseach what steps he proposed to take, or if he has any plans to arrest the present high rate of emigration.

I have repeatedly stated that it is the aim of the Government to remove the economic reasons for emigration. With this in view, the Government have promoted a major programme of economic expansion. This programme has been implemented with such vigour that, in the last calendar year, the target increase in real national income is estimated to have been doubled. The Minister for Industry and Commerce, in introducing the Estimates for his Department last week, detailed the progress being made in the industrial sector of the economy, and, in the coming weeks, the House will have the opportunity of hearing progress reports from other Ministers.
