Vol. 190 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Number of Civil Servants.

7.

asked the Minister for Finance the number of civil servants, together with the number in each of the various ranks and grades in each Department; and the number in each of these ranks and grades in each Department who come from areas officially recognised as Gaeltacht areas under Ordú na Limistéirí Gaeltachta, 1956.

The Civil Service Census returns for 1961 are at present being processed and if the Deputy will repeat the first part of his question in three or four weeks' time I will arrange to have the information available.

I regret that the particulars requested in the second part of the question are not available from official records.

Does that mean the Minister is not keeping in touch with the number involved? I understood the Minister gave an undertaking to effect a substantial reduction in the number of civil servants?

He is keeping the matter under constant review.

That is all true.

The position now is that the Minister does not know what is the present position?

I do not know the figures for the end of April, and neither does the Deputy.

We do not, but we have a very shrewd suspicion.

The Deputy's suspicions are not always right.

It is like the 100,000 jobs. These materialised and the others did not.
