Vol. 191 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Afforestation in North Tipperary.

25.

asked the Minister for Lands how many people have offered land to his Department for forestry purposes in North Tipperary; the number of acres accepted; the number of schemes in operation; and the number of men employed at present on these schemes.

Statistics regarding lands on offer to my Department for forestry purposes are not kept separately for North Tipperary and the extraction of information separately for that area would involve excessive administrative cost. On the most recent available figures for the County as a whole, there are current offers of land from 274 people in the county. Agreement to purchase has been reached in respect of areas totalling 2,469 acres. Title is in course of clearance for these areas. Negotiations for the purchase of other areas totalling 3,034 acres, which have, on inspection, proved suitable for forestry purposes, are in progress.

As regards work in hands in North Tipperary there are four State Forest centres in the area—Newport, Roscrea, Silvermines and Templemore. Work is at present in progress at several properties of these forests and the total number of men employed on this work is 117.
