Vol. 191 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rents of Nurses' Apartments.

6.

asked the Minister for Health if he will ensure that nurses are not charged rent for their apartments while these apartments are being occupied by their substitutes during periods of sick or annual leave, when the substitute is also being charged rent for the same apartment.

Where a nurse who occupies apartments provided by a local authority goes on leave (sick or otherwise) the deduction from her salary for the emolument of apartments is not made in respect of any period in excess of one month.

Some time ago I caused to be conveyed to local authorities that I would have no objection to dispensing with the deduction in the case of absences of less than one month where the apartment is fully available to the health authority and is used, e.g. to accommodate a substitute nurse. The decision in each case, however, rests with the local authority.
