The only precise particulars of the number of horses exported for slaughter are those available since the introduction of the special licensing system on 1st December, 1960. In the period 1st December to 1st July, 1961, the number of horses exported to Continental Europe under licence for slaughter was 4,363.
Prior to the introduction of the licensing system, exporters were obliged to state in respect of live horses only whether they were (a) permanently exported, (b) temporarily exported, or (c) returned after temporary import. Information as to the subsequent disposal of the animals was not asked for.
In reply to a similar question on 10th February, 1960, a statement was circulated in the Official Report of that date giving particulars of horses exported permanently to Great Britain, to the Six Counties and to the principal Continental European countries for the years up to and including 1958. I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate in the Official Report a statement giving similar particulars for the years 1959 and 1960 and for the period 1st January, to 31st May, 1961.
