Vol. 191 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Consul Car.

25.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that the price charged for the new Ford Consul in this country is £710 and the price charged in England for a similar new car is £545; and if in view of the fact that this car is manufactured in this country he will explain why it costs £165 more here than it does in England.

The Deputy appears to have been misinformed in the matter. I am advised that the retail price of a similar car in England is £787.7.6.

Will the Minister agree that the figure he has given includes purchase tax?

I will, but that is the retail price to the public.

Will the Minister agree that the discrepancy is in the region of £165?

The other price includes import duty.

And freight charges and insurance.

Would the Minister give us the purchase tax in England, on the one hand, and the amount of duty here, on the other, so that we can get the two comparable figures?

I could not give all the figures. I could give freight and insurance——

Half a loaf is better than no bread.

Freight and insurance on imported aggregates and parts are estimated at £10 and customs duty is estimated at about £70.

And the purchase tax on the other side is?

It is £232.7.6 on that particular model.

There is £140 in the difference.

There are other factors which have to be taken into account as well, factors in relation to which I have not got the particulars here.
