Vol. 191 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pupils in National School Classes.

33.

asked the Minister for Education whether under the rules and regulations for national schools there is any rule limiting the number of pupils that may be allotted to a teacher in class.

There is no rule, as such limiting the number of pupils that may be allotted to a teacher in a class. Numbers are, in fact, limited by the regulations governing the overall staffing of any national school.

The average daily number of pupils per teacher in national schools for the school year 1959/60 was 34.

34.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state, from the latest figures available to him, the number of teachers who have (a) between 30 and 40 pupils, (b) between 40 and 50 pupils, (c) between 50 and 60 pupils, (d) between 60 and 70 pupils, (e) between 70 and 80 pupils, (f) between 80 and 90 pupils, (g) between 90 and 100 pupils, and (h) over 100 pupils normally under their care.

The information supplied annually by the schools to the Department gives the number of pupils according to standards but does not show the division of the standards into classes. Particulars are not available, therefore, as to the number of pupils in separate classes under each teacher. Accordingly, I regret that I am not in a position to furnish the information sought by the Deputy.

As I have informed the Deputy in reply to another question the average number of pupils per teacher in national schools in the school-year 1959-60 was 34.
