Vol. 191 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Salaries and Increments of Nurses.

4.

asked the Minister for Health whether, in view of the fact that nurses in this country are paid extremely poor salaries, and receive extraordinarily small increments for their years of service, he will without delay grant reasonable increases both in salary and increments to nurses in general.

The revision of the remuneration of nurses employed by local authorities is a matter for the local authorities concerned in the first instance. I am aware that negotiations are at present proceeding between the local authorities and organisations representing the nurses and, as I have already intimated, I shall give sympathetic consideration to any reasonable proposals which may be submitted to me arising out of such negotiations.
