Vol. 191 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork Schools.

20.

asked the Minister for Education the number of pupils on the rolls in the boys' national school at Douglas Parish, Cork; whether a new school is contemplated; if so, how many classrooms it will contain; how many pupils each classroom will accommodate; and whether provision is being made for further extension to the new school, if necessary, in this rapidly expanding area.

In the quarter ended 30th June, 1961, there was an average enrolment of 248 pupils in the Douglas Boys' National School, while the average attendance was 214. It is proposed to erect a new school on a site offered by the manager, and sketch plans will be prepared by the Commissioners of Public Works. The new school will provide accommodation for 240 pupils in 5 classrooms each for 48 units. The Commissioners have been asked to design the school so that it may be extended if required.

21.

asked the Minister for Education when the proposed primary school is likely to be erected at Doneraile, County Cork.

I understand from the Commissioners of Public Works that the preparation of the detailed working drawings and specification for the proposed new school at Doneraile is now well advanced. The Commissioners expect to be in a position to invite tenders for the erection of the building in the near future. I cannot, however, say when work on the erection of the school is likely to commence.

22.

asked the Minister for Education when the proposed improvements to Boherbue national school, County Cork, will be carried out.

Following completion of the working drawings and specification for the scheme of improvements to Boherbue National School the Reverend Manager was requested by the Commissioners of Public Works in February last to have certain local arrangements completed preliminary to the invitation of tenders. I understand that these arrangements have not been attended to. Efforts are being made with a view to having all outstanding matters completed as soon as possible by the local parties.

I am not, therefore, in a position to say when the work will be carried out.

Could the Minister say what are the local arrangements that are necessary?

At the moment the Department are awaiting a reply to a letter they sent to the manager of the school in regard to certain questions that have to be decided before the matter can proceed any further. I cannot say exactly what they are.
