Vol. 191 No. 8

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Repairs to Binghamstown (Mayo) Schools.

46.

asked the Minister for Education when the necessary repairs will be undertaken on the following schools in the Binghamstown parish, County Mayo: (1) Aughleam, (2) Binghamstown, (3) Corclough, (4) Tipp and (5) Shanaghee.

I assume that the schools referred to by the Deputy as Binghamstown and Tipp are Kilmore Erris and Fishing Station Schools respectively.

There are no proposals under consideration in my Department for the carrying out of repairs to the five schools mentioned by the Deputy. The question of replacing these schools by new buildings is, however, receiving attention and the present position in each case is as follows:—

Aughleam: My Department has sanctioned a grant towards the cost of the erection of a new school. I understand that arrangements are being made locally to have a well sunk to provide a water supply for sanitation purposes. When the Commissioners of Public Works are assured that an adequate water supply is available, preparation of working drawings and a specification for the new school will be undertaken.

Kilmore Erris: Reverend Manager has been asked to obtain a site for a new school to replace the present building, but a site has not yet been offered.

Corclough: A suitable site has been offered for a new school at Corclough. The Commissioners of Public Works have been asked to prepare sketch plans for the proposed new school.

Fishing Station and Shanaghee: It is proposed to erect a new central school at Aughaglasheen to replace these two schools. My Department has sanctioned a grant towards the cost of the new school and arrangements for its erection are being made by the Commissioners of Public Works. The Commissioners expect to be in a position to invite tenders in the near future.
