Vol. 191 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Grants for Teachers' Houses.

19.

asked the Minister for Education if he will consider the advisability of granting a subvention to teachers to enable them to build their own houses in the area in which they work, and so enable them to settle in the district, thus ensuring continuity between teachers and pupils which is so essential to rural education.

In view of the facilities by way of grant and loan which are available generally for the erection of private housing, I am not satisfied that it is necessary to make special arrangements of the nature contemplated by the Deputy.

Would the Minister not consider it would encourage teachers to build houses in their own areas and would he not further consider it a great advantage for them to do so?

It possibly would encourage them, but I have more pressing priorities.
