Vol. 191 No. 9

Joint Committee on the Electoral Law: Final Report.

I move:—

That the final report do lie upon the Table.

That the final report and the proceedings of the Joint Committee be printed.

Could the Taoiseach tell us what use this report will be, in view of the fact that the Dáil will be dissolved? Will it then be negatived?

First of all, I have not said that the Dáil will be dissolved. Secondly, may I point out that this is precisely the type of report which I think Deputies should have plenty of time to consider before legislative proposals are based on it.

This committee has done pretty useful work, I think everybody will agree. But are its recommendations to be set at nought, if the Dáil is dissolved? Would it be necessary for such a committee to sit again?

Not at all. The report of this Committee will, presumably, be the basis for changes in the electoral law at some future stage.

The Electoral Law Reform Committee have done their job but the Minister for Local Government has not done his by implementing the last report.

The report of the Committee is now being presented today.

No, the last report; not this one.

Is the Deputy asking for more legislation?

We have to change the names of the judges.

The committee did their job, but the Minister did not.

Agreed and ordered accordingly.
