Vol. 191 No. 9

Committee on Finance - Vote 14—Superannuation and Retired Allowances (Supplementary Estimate).

I move:

That a supplementary sum not exceeding £10 be granted to defray the charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending on the 31st day of March, 1962, for Pensions, Superannuation, Compensation (including Workmen's Compensation), and Additional and other Allowances and Gratuities under the Superannuation Acts, 1834 to 1956, and sundry other Statutes; Extra-Statutory Pensions, Allowances, and Gratuities awarded by the Minister for Finance; fees to Medical Referees and occasional fees to Doctors; Compensation and other Payments in respect of Personal Injuries; etc.

This is the point Deputy Sweetman was talking about. This Supplementary Estimate is to be taken in conjunction with the main Estimate for Superannuation and Retired Allowances. It gives effect to the decision reached lately to give gratuities to unestablished civil servants who retire after seven instead of 15 years. That will come into operation and it is now awaiting statutory confirmation.

Do I understand correctly that because of the intention to introduce legislation at a later date, the sanction of the Appropriation Act will be sufficient?

That is right.

Therefore, as soon as the Appropriation Bill has been passed, the necessary authority is available. Can the Minister tell me in respect of retiral after what date?

From 5th May, 1960. It goes back to 5th May, 1960, which was the date of the agreement.

Anyone who retired since 5th May, 1960, is covered?

On or after that date.

Vote put and agreed to.
